Breast Cancer Recovery & Physical Therapy

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer, supporting those affected by the disease, and highlighting the importance of early detection and research. Beyond these critical points, it’s also an opportunity to explore how essential Physical Therapy is in the recovery process for breast cancer patients. Many survivors face ongoing challenges post-surgery or treatment, and PT plays a vital role in helping them regain strength, mobility, and confidence in their bodies.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

After breast cancer surgery, whether it’s a lumpectomy, mastectomy, or reconstruction, patients often experience limited shoulder mobility, muscle tightness, and even pain in the chest or back. At Fitzgerald PT, we create tailored exercise programs that focus on restoring range of motion, reducing scar tissue formation, and preventing complications like lymphedema. Early intervention with PT helps patients regain strength, rebuild their mobility, and reduce the likelihood of long-term issues.

Managing Lymphedema

Lymphedema, a condition involving swelling due to the buildup of lymphatic fluid. It is a common concern after breast cancer surgery, especially if lymph nodes were removed. We as Physical Therapists can play a key role in managing and reducing lymphedema through techniques like manual lymphatic drainage, compression garments, and exercises designed to promote lymph flow. Left untreated, lymphedema can become painful and lead to significant disability. However, with regular PT, patients can control symptoms and maintain their independence.

Rebuilding Strength and Endurance

Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can leave patients feeling weak and fatigued, impacting their ability to engage in daily activities. Physical therapy provides a safe, structured approach to rebuilding strength and endurance. Our therapists use low-impact exercises, stretching, and conditioning programs that are carefully adjusted to each patient’s physical abilities and treatment status. Over time, this helps patients regain muscle strength and energy, allowing them to return to their normal routines faster.

Emotional and Psychological Support

The physical benefits of PT are clear, but it’s also important to acknowledge its emotional impact. The journey through breast cancer can be emotionally draining, and physical limitations can further contribute to feelings of frustration or loss. Working with a physical therapist provides not only physical relief but also emotional encouragement. We offer a source of motivation, helping patients feel more in control of their recovery and empowering them to rebuild their lives post-treatment.

From managing post-surgical complications to rebuilding strength and confidence, PT helps patients heal both physically and emotionally. If you or someone you know is navigating breast cancer recovery, please let them know the benefits of physical therapy as part of the healing journey.
